We are three adults, myself, my husband and my sister who had a wonderful 3 day stay at the Fitter House on Mount Desert Island’s “quiet side”. Our stay was at the end of a 4 week road trip through New Brunswick, PEI and Nova Scotia, so we arrived at bustling Bar Harbor via the ferry from Yarmouth, Nova Scotia. As Bar Harbor was so busy, we were really grateful that this property is on the quiet side of Mt. Desert and yet close to everything you would want or need. Charming South Harbor with its cute shops and restaurants (very uncrowded compared to Bar Harbor) is very nearby. The house is down a quiet, private road, not on the waterfront but surrounded by lovely woods frequented by deer. It also very close to some nice easy to moderate Acadia National Park trails. We really enjoyed doing the Shipyard Trail, an hour or so round trip walk through beautiful woods to the rocky coastline. Don’t miss Thurston’s Lobster Pound in Tremont…we both “ate in” and bought lobster to cook at our 3 day home.
The house itself has everything you need for a comfortable stay: a well-appointed kitchen, comfortable furniture and beds, fresh linens and lovely decor. The hosts left some water and snacks for us which were much appreciated, and also left some staples like coffee, cooking oil, spices, etc so we could prepare our own meals.
I highly recommend staying at this property if you wish to have some peace and quiet and still be close to every Mount Desert Island and Acadia have to offer.
