The home is beautifully situated, overlooking tiny Shelter Cove village and the ocean. It is modern and in excellent condition and was immaculately clean upon arrival. We knew in advance to bring our own food because full-sized grocery stores are 45 min. away. The kitchen is very well-stocked, in terms of cookware and dishes, for real cooking, which we did and had great meals. (The kitchen could use silicone or wooden toast tongs. Hard to remove toast without unplugging toaster and using an implement.) The beds and pillows were comfortable, the bathrooms were very nice (good showers, thick towels). The main living space was wonderful, with its two-story-high ceiling and windows looking out onto the Pacific. It was always flooded with light. The view was "natural TV."
We walked a lot every day, especially along Black Sands Beach, which even during July, we had mostly to ourselves. It is a fairly short walk to get to this beautiful beach. We also enjoyed walking to other points of interest along the rocky bluffs. It was fun to watch the sunbathing seals and see the pelicans, cormorants, and gulls. Two evenings, we sat in the beer garden at the brew pub, Gyppo, and had good beers, while looking out on the ocean, the tiny airstrip, the "golf course," and the grazing deer (everywhere).
Shelter Cove was as quiet as can be. About the only sound were the birds. We rarely even encountered other people. At night, it was completely quiet and the stars were brilliant...almost as though one were out in the middle of the ocean (almost no light pollution).
To enjoy Shelter Cove, I think one goes there for what it offers: A remote, small, peaceful, quiet place that is stunningly beautiful. The "entertainment" is the natural beauty of the setting. It likely remains quiet and peaceful because of its remote setting: One has to travel about 45 minutes over a narrow, winding, hilly road to get there. If not used to such roads, the drive is a bit "thrilling," shall I say. (Drive carefully!) However, the drive is well worth it if one values the unique qualities of Shelter Cove. Go there to get away from the pace and stress of modern life. Bring good books, prepare good food and enjoy good wine, take long walks, sleep in total quietude. (If you can stay long enough, write a novel!) Restore yourself -- body and mind. Great visit. Should have stayed longer. Hope to be able to return.
