My husband and my two children (ages 5 and 8) had an amazing albeit short stay of four days. It was a lot of house for 4 people! One quickly feels at home here-I have decided it's part of the magic. We found the house very comfortable and slept wonderfully. I would recommend earplugs as there were occasions when the neighborhood dogs went bonkers barking through the night. They are hounds and they bayed at some foxes rather incessantly (this was Mari's theory when we shared our story the following morning). We enjoyed the large yard and visiting with the 2 mother and daughter horses and donkey Enriqueta in the pasture next to the house. As an equestrienne, I would have loved to have horse riding included in the program but alas, it is not. The location, although ideal for us, may be a bit quiet for those desiring to see the "sights". We had been in Asturias/Cantabria for the previous 2 weeks so we looked forward to a relatively low key stay in Huelle. That said, the beaches and towns ( San Vicente, Comillas, etc) are nearby. The house is well appointed and we were particularly excited to have a "real" dryer. Parents of young children will understand. In order to make the most of that big field with children, I would recommend bringing a soccer ball, paddle ball set, etc as no such items are available at the house. Watch how you kick that ball as the river runs right at the edge of the property. It would have been nice to have a little path cut down so that we could explore the water. Speaking of exercise, my husband and I are runners and we ran the nearby trail into the woods, the roman trail. It is pretty but it is short (1 mile?). I tried most of the off shoots but it did not seem you could go that far. We compensated by doubling back and running on the road where there is a short path). Maybe we have to check it out again when we come back...
As mentioned in previous reviews, the housekeeper Mari is a delightful person. Her stories are very funny in Spanish and still funny if you don't speak Spanish (according to my non Spanish speaking husband). Mari comes to clean the house around noon everyday for a couple hours (even if you are very neat). She really makes the place special. The owner Margaret was very responsive. I am a cook and I found the kitchen well enough supplied. We enjoyed our meals outside. Cantabria is a dream for a foodie. We hope to come back one day. It is a magical place.
