Old-established hotel in the downtown of Alger
Safir Hotel, Algier, is old-established and old and grubby. I recommend the hotel to only those who loves traditional and colonial style hotels. Cleanliness of room/hotel: Cleanliness of the room is not satisfied standard, and the room with furnitures should be renovated. When I entered the room after check-in, there were many pieces of rubbishes on carpet, so I had to call a housekeeper to make the room clean up. Quality of service: Not bad but not so good. The staffs in the front desk, the restaurant, together with housekeepers are friendly. Hotel amenities: The towels equipped are old and not clean, and I used my own towels bought by myself. Hotel location: Very good. Centre of the down town of Alger. Other information: Notice if you would take a taxi at the Alger Airport. I transferred from Airport to the hotel by Taxi. The fee was 2000ADN from the International terminal of the airport, but it was 1200ADN from the National terminal where we can move from the International to the National by 5 min walk.

Not worth a visit and not worth the money !!
Room was not clean, smelt of smoke and drains. Air con didn't work in 36 degrees heat. Bed uncomfortable and got many unwanted residents (bitten many times in the night). Hotel service poor, food options limited and breakfast not worth the effort to get out of bed ....apart from the welcome rest from being bitten by my many bed inhabitants , and it was cooler in the restaurant !! Impossible to get a beer or alcoholic drink without eating food in the restaurant, told to order from the room but telephone didn't work !!

Terrible Hotel
Considering the cost of this hotel (€80 per night) it is extremely poor value. Very poor service and I strongly advise to leave no valuables in your room and not to leave your room key at the reception as this appears to be a signal for the staff to go and check your room as happened to both me and my colleague who both had money removed. I strongly advise that people do not stay at this hotel.

Friendly staff - excellent location
Enjoyed my 5 nights stay in hotel that was broken into 2 nights and later 3 nights after a tour of Oran. Staff was very friendly but spoke little English. French mainly spoken here with some Arabic. Room was very clean. Be sure to check toilet in room when you first check in as I was assigned a room where the toilet seat was missing. Unfortunate that there is no shower curtain in the bathroom as the floor will end up a large puddle if one is not careful. Walking distance to money changers, National Theatre, Central Post Office, but too far to walk to the major museums, ie: Bardo (closed April 2014) and the Archaeology Museum. Also close to the Casbah where there are 2 excellent museums. Breakfast typical of hotels in Algeria- croissants, coffee, yoghert, hard boiled egg, bread and jam, unless you book into a 5 star hotel. All in all, a good stay. Check out their bird cage elevators.

Very friendly hotel with convenient location
Stayed in hotel for 5 days. Staff very friendly although they speak limited English. Rooms were on the whole fairly large (I stayed in 3 different rooms), clean, with hot water. Warning about bathrooms - after assigned a room, make sure to check out the bathroom before settling in. There was no toilet seat in one of my assigned rooms, and in another room, the toilet did not flush. There are no shower curtains in the bathtubs so floors tend to end up wet and slippery. Close to walking distance to Central Post Office, the National Theatre, money changers, the Casbah, but too difficult to do the uphill climb to the Archaeology Museum.

Excellent location
The location of the hotel is perfect and right in the city center. Rember ear plugs so that you are not woken up the traffic though. Friendly staff, especially the cleaning ladies were very nice and one even came running after us when we were leaving and one in the group forgot her camera in the room. Breakfast buffet consists of baguette, croissants, yoghurt, eggs and juice. I would come again because of the convenient location and reasonable price. It is only sad that the hotel is not maintained - the glory days are over.

Faded glory - and it must have been glorious. The rooms are large and light and all seem to have balconies. The staff in all areas of the hotel do all they can to help in spite of my lack of French. Have stayed here twice and would happily stay again

In city center and affordable
The only advantage of it was being close to the city center. Staff is just ok and it is difficult to communicate if you don't speak French or Arabic. Hotel is really old and needs a change. It is as if everything was just maintained ages ago and left like that. It is mostly used by locals or domestic travelers and I have only seen a few foreigners during the entire stay. Restaurant and food is mediocre at best even though it is quite pricey and staff is arrogant. Rooms are kept clean and no problems with daily cleaning but I would suggest to check if the A/C is working especially for summer stays. Overall, if you have to stay in the city center and if you want to avoid taxis and constant traffic jams and if you don't want to spend a fortune, this place can be your worst best choice.

Do they want guests ?
I never experienced such a terrible stay. I booked a seaview room I got a room on the back overlooking poorly maintained buildings. The front desk employees do not seem to have the words "welcome, good evening, thank you, please"in their vocabulary, as I have been greated by "passport". Back from a party I was blocked outside, under the rain, all accesses beeing looked and an employee lloking at me from the porch, thinking if he wants to get wet to come and open me. My chauffeur had to use the horn to make him come to shout at him. I complaint, got no answer or apologies. THe croissant and bread of the miserable blreafast were at least 3 days old. I do not recommend this hotel and cannot understand that it is presented in this website.

A hotel with character from the colonial era.
The Safir Hotel was opened as a casino in around 1920 and was once a top hotel in Algiers; it isn't any longer, as under government ownership it is looking unloved and shabby. But it still has a lot of character from the French colonial era and is well located, clean and reasonably comfortable. Most of the staff are friendly and efficient but some of the dining room waiters can appear surly; the food is at best mediocre.

Full of history and in the heart of the city
The stay was very much what i was expecting in a hotel full of history. The somewhat odd old style of the rooms makes it unique. The staff was nice, although more could probably be done so one feels more at home.

Vergane glorie.
Vergane glorie, smerig tapijt in de kamer, ongeinteresseerd personeel al lijkt dit de standaard te zijn. Wel een goede locatie nabij Kasbah en Alger Centre, mooi uitzicht over de haven!
