House in mountain location with amazing views.

This beautiful private house is set in a half acre plot on the edge of a quiet village, situated on the slopes of the Cabrales valley and next to the Picos de Europa national park. It is a place to enjoy peace and tranquility and to get away from the noise of modern life.

Accommodation is on two storeys with a generous open plan living space on the upper floor with cosy sofas and a wood burning stove. There is a large covered deck leading off the living space with fabulous views looking across a green wooded valley and the houses and church of a village below. The majestic peaks of the Picos de Europa mountains rise up in the background.

This area of Spain is easily reached by ferry or plane from the UK and other parts of Europe. Ryanair fly from London and Edinburgh to Santander, Easyjet fly from London to Asturias airport and from Edinburgh, Bristol, London and Manchester to Bilbao. Vueling also fly from Heathrow to Bilbao. If you want to go slow, then there are regular ferries with Brittany Ferries departing Plymouth or Portsmouth to Santander or Bilbao.

This house was built in 2008 following the traditional Asturian style. The wooden balcony on the south facade gives a fantastic first impression when you arrive. It has lots of character and charm with all the conveniences of a contemporary house. It was built by father and daughter team Julian and Anna Usborne who bought the plot of land in 2005 after visiting the area. We really love this house and visit it as often as possible. What makes the house so amazing is the mountain location and the village where it is situated. The local people are very friendly and will go out of their way to help although most people don't speak English so it is a great opportunity to practice speaking Spanish! There are about 60 residents in the village and people buy their groceries from visiting vans that supply fresh fish, fruit and vegetables and other groceries. There are also a range of shops and restaurants 10 minutes away by car in the villages of Carreña or Arenas de Cabrales.

There are lots of things to do and places to see within easy driving distance of the house. You can drive up into the mountains and explore the high snowy peaks. We walked to the base of the 'Naranjo de Bulnes' which is one of the highest peaks in the Picos range at around 2500 metres. If you don't fancy exerting yourself too much, there is a funicular railway that takes you up to the small village of Bulnes, high in the mountains and inaccessible by car. There are many routes for all levels of walking from gentle strolls to all day hikes. Other popular activities in the area include swimming at the local river or the nearby beaches. There is a fantastic beach at about 30 minutes drive called Niembro and the neighbouring naturist beach of Torimbia is also worth visiting. Continuing with water activities, canoeing is a popular activity along the river Sella and canoes can be hired with the possibility of being picked up downstream after a hard day's paddling.

There are many interesting places to visit within an hours drive or so. The town of Cangas de Onis is about 35 minutes away and has a fantastic market on Sunday mornings. This is well worth a visit especially if you are a foodie. There are hundreds of different types of local cheese for sale as well as smoked and unsmoked chorizo, dry cured ham and fruit and vegetables. Further afield at about 1hr 30 minutes is the city of Oviedo, where you can see beautiful architecture, hang out in the street cafés and enjoy the amazing covered food market. Again a foodie paradise, with many different types of fish you never see in the UK. The city of Santander is also quite easy to reach, at about 1hr 30 minutes drive. It is a beautiful port city with beaches and lots of shopping options. A bit further away is Bilbao, at about 3hrs drive but still possible for a day trip or overnight stay. There is the amazing Guggenheim museum and lots of shopping and restaurant possibilities.
During your stay at this holiday home, you'll be close to Ruta'l Quesu y la Sidra. Features include 1 hot tub. Free WiFi and a kitchen are available in the holiday home.

Beautiful House in the Picos
A modern well constructed home built to fit the aesthetic of the small village. 3 bedrooms and bathrooms on the first floor, and kitchen, dining and living quarters on the 2nd were well designed for our small group of one couple and two singles. The kitchen was well appointed for home cooking. The information found in the house about things to do in the area, particularly local walks and hikes, was very useful. Would strongly recommend this house if you are visiting the Picos for an extended period.

Excellent in every way, as usual
We have stayed at Casa Usborne several times and it is the best holiday rental we have found anywhere, and we have stayed in quite a few. Well equipped (including the kitchen where a lot of similar properties are lacking), comfortable, great location with lovely views especially from the balcony. The owner and the local house manager are very helpful.

First class house
This property is exceptionally good and extremely tastefully appointed. Constructed by the owner and her father, a lot of love and care has gone into the design of the building which is extremely compatible with the surrounding area. Wonderful fireplace and French windows seemingly everywhere. Stunning mountain views. Secluded and extremely comfortable. It is our solid intention to return at a later date. Thanks

A beautiful house, wonderfully equipped and very comfortable. We had an incredibly restful stay here, with only the sound of birds around us. Stunning views. Just what we needed to relax; we couldn’t have asked for anything more.

Beautiful Home in a Beautiful Area
This home served us very well for the week that we were visiting the Asturias region. It is solidly built, thoughtfully designed and filled with light from its many windows, which we appreciated very much. We loved the birdsong and the cowbells in the distance, and watching the clouds and mist move across the mountains. Internet and cellular service were almost always available and more robust than we would have expected for such a remote area. And despite its rural location, restaurants and shops were available within a 10-15 minute drive. The small mountain road was narrow and winding but not scary (smooth surface, no exposure), but as with many roads in the area, you do have to slow way down on the the sharper turns as many people drive too fast, even into the blind turns where sometimes only one can pass at a time. We had hoped to bike some of these roads but quickly though better of it for this reason. We would visit this area and this home again.

A peaceful place in the Picos!
This is a lovely property - it is extremely comfortable and has all amenities. The views from the balcony and all windows are stunning with mountains all around. Drinks on the balcony are a must to appreciate the beautiful village of Berodia and its surrounds. Anna has gone above and beyond to provide her guests with all they need in terms of maps, suggested places to visit, markets, walks in the area. It was a wonderful stay and we would love to return.

Stunning location
This was perfect accommodation for 3 couples..spacious comfortable and well equipped. We particularly enjoyed sitting out on the large veranda enjoying the views, the sounds and the fresh air. The location is idyllic...up in the mountains off the beaten track but easy to get to other places. The provision of suggested walks (with detailed maps) places to visit, books and DVDs was much appreciated. We would certainly consider coming back.

Beautiful house in a beautiful place
We had a wonderful week staying at Casa Usborne with our children aged 8, 6 and 3. The house is tastefully decorated and has a great open plan layout in the kitchen/ dining area/ lounge opening on to a lovely balcony. It is one of the best equipped holiday lets we’ve ever stayed in. We found everything we needed in the kitchen, there was plenty of storage space, good washing and drying facilities and coat hooks and towel hooks in all the right places. There is a comprehensive selection of DVDs and board games in case of unpredictable mountain weather and, most helpfully, a hugely detailed folder with information about local eateries, activities and walks, as well as a useful collection of maps. We wanted for nothing. Others have commented on it being challenging to drive in and out of the property - it’s true there is a bit of a knack to it, but we managed it every day in a massive hire van so it’s definitely doable - don’t be put off. I’ve seldom been to an area that offers such a variety of things to do. We spent a couple of days exploring stunning nearby beaches, but also did lots of splendid walks. We particularly enjoyed getting the funicular railway up to Bulnes, following the short ramble round the village of Berodia suggested by the owners, and walking at the Lagos de Covadonga. The whole area feels very unspoilt and unpretentious. It caters mainly to Spanish visitors and it’s such a breath of fresh air from more touristy parts of Spain. Anna, the owner of Casa Usborne, clearly takes pride of offering her guests a wonderful holiday experience. This place is gold dust. I can’t recommend it highly enough.

Sad to leave this beautiful place
We absolutely loved this house. It was the best equipped house we have stayed in. The views were amazing and we enjoyed eating on the balcony taking in the mountains views and listening to the cowbells. The local information and maps were really helpful, there is so much to do in the area. We particularly loved the ruta del cares with lunch in Cains, kayaking down the Sella, and taking the funicular up to some lovely mountain walks. Having failed to get parked for the funicular one day we booked the 8.30 am one the next day which worked out great - easy parking and cooler for walking in the morning. We were sitting down to a late lunch in Bulnes having finished our walk in beautiful sunshine while others were just arriving. Beware Cabrales cheese is really really strong, We like strong cheese but couldn't eat this!

Perfect Location
The house is very spacious and well equipped and if needed, the drying facilities are excellent. The view from the upper terrace is the most stunning of any holiday accommodation we have stayed in and the photos do not do justice to the beautiful surroundings. We particularly liked being in a small rural village with much evidence of various farming activities still carried out a in traditional way. Being only a few minutes drive from the main road, we found the various places of interest, be they mountain or coastal, very accessible. This part of the Picos is very scenic and we would have no hesitation in staying here again.

Perfect!
Thank you for a wonderful experience! The house was very comfortable and had everything our family with 3 teenagers needed. The scenery was unbelievably beautiful. We loved being tucked right in the mountains and able to wander right from the house. Anna was quick to respond to all of our questions. The book with tips and hikes was very helpful. The fresh flowers on the table when we arrived were a very nice touch. I hope we get the chance to go back someday.

The perfect HomeAway booking
Anna’s home is simply perfect. We’ve stayed in many rental homes - Anna’s is definitely one of our favourites and one which we were sad to leave. Anna has created an incredibly welcoming and modern space. It has all the home comforts you’d expect and at the same time maintains a feeling of country authenticity. The views from EVERY room are superb. We enjoyed several meals in the dining area and on the porch; watching the clouds shift over the mountains, with the sound of cow bells in the distance. Berodia is conveniently situated for a number of great walks and activities, so you can make the most of being in one of Spain’s most beautiful mountain ranges.

This is the most beautiful and tranquil home. It was so hard to leave it behind!
If you want peace and tranquillity away from people and traffic and enjoy beautiful mountain scenery then this house is perfect. It is extremely clean and the kitchen is very well equipped. The terrace is the best part, looking over the mountains with only the birds and a few distant cow bells as the sound. Just absolute bliss! I have been all over the world and never fallen in love with a place as much as this. Thank you to Anna for making this special retreat and for sharing it!

Magical Place to Stay, Truly Extraordinary
We loved staying at Casa Usborne. Its location may be a bit out of the way, but driving up to Berodia is worth the effort. Views from the house are stunning - nothing to do but employ an overused word. The Picos rise sharply to the south, foothills and mountains stretch for as far as the eye can see to the east and north, with the cute little village rising on the western slope behind the entry door. Clouds and mist drift by in the valley below the house, across the peaks as well as way high up - a constantly changing spectacle of light and water molecules. The sounds of jingling bells on sheep, donkeys and cattle mingle with the babbling noises from the nearby river. Some days we sat mesmerized for 3-4 hours on the upper porch listening to it all and soaking in the scenery. The house itself is intelligently designed and well-appointed; it was perfect for our party of four. We enjoyed cooking and grilling at Casa Usborne after shopping from the vans that came to Berodia selling groceries, fish, meat, fruit & veg or at markets and bakeries in Arenas and Carrena. We worked off some of the calories by walking in virtually every direction: Down to Inguanzo, over to La Molina, and (full disclosure) to many dead-ends on gorgeous hillsides. The neighbors and villagers were very warm and welcoming as were folks in places farther afield: Asiego, Bulnes, Sotres, Cangas (for the San Antonio fiesta!), Llanes. We had a wonderful stay and are already thinking about how/when we can return.

Perfect accommodation in stunning location
Couldn't fault it. We chose the accommodation first which then took us to Asturias and the Picos de Europa. A full week of glorious warm and sunny weather in such a stunning landscape of high mountains teaming with wildlife and beautiful coastlines including dinosaur footprints! And the best view of Naranjo de Bulnes was just down the road, stunning in the evening sunshine from a picnic area high up in the village of Asiego. The Pintxos (Tapas) were so tasty and inexpensive. Booking and communication were first class. Thank you Casa Usborne for such a wonderful holiday.

Breath Taking Views
This home is a fully equipped and a very comfortable home. Every window, terrace or balcony has breathtaking views. It is clear that you are staying in someone else's home, not just a rental and therefore there is nothing missing. In very close proximity, you can enjoy incredible hikes and make your choice of destination based on Anna's and other guests suggestions located in the "hiking log". I have personally recommended this accommodation to friends, don't pass it up.

wonderful and welcoming
We had a wonderful week in Casa Usborne! The house is beautiful, light, clean and roomy. And the views from the spacious balcony are just nd amazing. The village is nice and quiet and the house has everything one could need. We found the walks folder and maps particularly helpful and did several amazing hikes which were strenuous and adventurous enough to also please our children (7, 10, 12 and 14). Some minor remarks: the drive was not easy to negotiate with our mini-van and it was a bit of a pity that the garden and paths were rather full of weeds.

Beautiful house in a stunning location
Casa Usborne is in a stunning mountain village setting, with amazing views from all windows. The house is extremely comfortable and equipped with everything you could need. We stayed with a toddler and Anna was very helpful in advance, so we had use of a cot, high chair and stair gate - all of which made our stay just that bit easier. We would definitely recommend and hope to return again ourselves - thoroughly deserves its 5 star rating.

STUNNING VIEWS, PEACEFUL, WONDERFUL!
Imagine a place at the top of a fairly remote hilltop village in the middle of the Picos de Europa mountains. A place with views out of every window and which has been so thoughtfully designed, that wherever you look you can see for literally miles. The only sound is birdsong and cow bells. This is Casa Usborne and what a place it is. If you're looking for a place away from it all, love walking and don't mind the nearest supermarket being 10 minutes away, this is the place. Sitting out on the veranda and just watching the clouds move slowly across the mountain or just the utter silence of the place was such a treat. The only faults we could find were not enough dishwasher tablets and not enough black plastic bags for rubbish, that was literally it. We absolutely loved it here. It felt like home and we were very sad to leave.

We were in Casa Usborne for a second time. And again it was beautiful. The views you can enjoy from the house are amazing. At night the sky is spectacular. It is so dark that you can enjoy a view of the sky that makes you want to come back soon. This has been our second stay. And we are already longing for a third one. The house has been arranged by Anna very thoughtfully. Thank you Anna. Best Ellen
