History, like the old dimly lit corridors leading to breakfast room, except couldn’t see what you were eating properly where we were put, some of the tables l noticed were in a better position with better lighting, even though we were at the breakfast earlier than some we were put in the same area, l did ask to sit somewhere with more light but they seem to sit other people in the better lit areas, twice l noticed certain residents got priority, even though we didn’t pay for cheap accommodation and we were at the breakfast room first and the tables didn’t have a reserved sign so l was a bit annoyed and l did happen to come across some foreign object in my food as l couldn’t see properly, don’t know where it came from as it was like a piece of fibre as l was eating only on the second morning this happened to which put me off, also the Courtyard State room we were in No 29 was lovely but there was a lot of noise coming from the room next to us all through most of the night , didn’t get much sleep, glad l was only there for two nights as l would of complained, next time l think l would stay in the Castle rooms as l think they are more soundproof.

An incredibly countryside gem

I am from the US, but I found this place after discovering through Ancestry research that the Lumley family is in my family tree, and I found this castle in searching them and I wanted to see it, so we came. Lumley Castle is a unique and amazing gem. There is so much history. The reception desk sells a book about the history, which is definitely worth purchasing. We attended Burns Nights in Baron's Hall, and the event was wonderful, with great food and fun dancing afterwards. The event spaces are just beautifully maintained. Our Castle Classic room was small but beautiful. The tub was perfect and we took luxurious soaks. The little vanity area was a very nice touch. We thoroughly enjoyed our breakfast each day and we stayed for dinner one night as well. Afternoon tea on Saturday was fairly priced and the scones and cakes were delicious. The library bar has such a perfect vibe. I loved reading by the fire with a drink. We could not have had a better stay. Also, even though it is in the middle of nowhere, you can actually still get Uber Eats from the cities nearby. It felt a little odd to be texting my uber driver, I will meet you by the entrance to the castle, but alas, it worked out just fine.

A beautiful quirky hotel.

Do not be put off by the fact I gave it 4 stars for comfort - part of its charm is nothing is straight in the place. The windows, doors and often the floors are wonky. But is really is a fantastic place to stay. Where else are you going to walk through a wardrobe to your bathroom. Lovely None of the pics I uploaded do it justice

Loved it

Very comfortable rooms and beds. Slept well. The serving staff at breakfast were a bit unprofessional discussing some internal hotel politics loudly which was a shame.

Beautiful, welcoming and comfortable

What a building Lumley Castle is!!! Beautifully converted into a hotel keeping the originality of the castle, reception staff welcoming which was a theme continuing to the bar and waiting staff. Food and drinks were lovely and the room very comfortable, I will definitely be revisiting!

Room needs some TLC , staff amazing

Check in wasn’t good , the directions to the room wasn’t clear, after 15 min of walking round the castle with two heavy bags we had to phone reception and ask them to come and help us . While walking round the castle we say lots and lots of dirty plates, cups glasses, left over food, outside peoples rooms and on windows sills. The stairs to our room were very difficult to get up. I ordered a bottle of bubbly and two glasses to the room as a SUPRISE for my husbands birthday. It never arrived even after me speaking to reception to ask if they could bring it up , when we checked out they tried to charge me for it. The room was dusty and the pot for tea coffee ect was absolutely filthy. Broken ornaments in the room, poor lighting , hardly any coat hangers, lack of attention to detail from house keeping, I would say, stains on the table and a very worn chair in the room. We stayed in the courtyard a few weeks ago and the room was amazing, we paid over £100 extra for this room and it was very poor. The staff are amazing, all extremely friendly, extremely helpful, polite, , the breakfast was very good , the cocktails in the library are lovely. We will definitely come back , but would only book to stay in the courtyard now, unless there is some updating work done in the castle rooms.
