Small, clean and extremely friendly little hotel.
My sister and I had a very enjoyable stay at the Flame Tree Hotel, It was small ,very compact and clean and tidy. The food was good and home cooked ...and generous portions. The staff were extremely helpful and interested in what their guests were doing and how they had enjoyed their days. I had a slight accident on our last night and the staff deAlt with it efficiently and with compassion... All in all a lovely little hotel.

Pleasant reception and stay
We booked the hotel to provide an additional stop-over prior to moving to our long stay residence. We were pleasantly surprised by the good reception we received from the staff of this family run hotel. It provided all we required for a very competitive price. An unexpected bonus was the good quality of the food produced by their own kitchen.

Charming hotel
Very pleasant hotel with it's own charming character and a great contrast to the soulless concrete monoliths that abound on Madeira. We were lucky to have a top floor room with balcony facing the sea. One of the better located rooms I believe. The room & ensuite were a bit 'tired' and quite small but very clean and adequate for our needs. There was more floor space on the balcony than in the room, the balcony being the best feature.

Excellent value
No complaints about our stay. Helpful staff, lovely meals and handy location. Away from the busy city centre, which was easy to get to by near by bus stop, or a twenty minute walk(uphill on the way back though!) Very good value for money, would definitely stay there again.

Value for money, basic hotel
so the small rooms have only a bed, a dressing table and a cupboard. It's basic. You must ensure you book a room with a balcony to enjoy the room. We managed to upgrade when we arrived but the rooms are usually booked over the summer and you may not get this chance. the breakfast was great and value for money. the staff are very friendly here. the hotel is walking distance to the centre at 15mins. however as the hotel is on an incline (hill), walking back from the centre is challenging. You can take a bus instead.

Small hotel , in two parts old/new
Good food, but sometimes took a long time to arrive, room adequate, but ours was above dining area, so there was discomfort from people smoking and noise , breakfast was served from 7.30am , so not good if you wanted a lie in.

Lovely quiet hotel with helpful staff
Although this hotel is a little way from centre it is a lovely quiet family run hotel with helpful staff. There is lots to see in Funchal. Hop on hop off bus ticket makes this a good way to see the city and the island bus tours also are good value too.

You pays your money.....
On arrival, the staff were fantastic and couldn't do enough for us. Unfortunately the enthusiasm of some staff gave way quite quickly and it was at times difficult to attract the attention of the waiters. Breakfast was excellent although despite being offered from 07.30, the ovens were not on, we had to wait for them to be heated up (10 mins) and then the food we received was cold and we could only assume it had been heated up from the day before as there was not enough time for them to have roasted tomatoes etc. We had dinner one evening and couscous with roasted vegetables consisted of couscous with lettuce, 2 slices of courgette and 1 cherry tomato. We sent the cheese board back as it comprised a small dish with a few lumps of cheese and 2 biscuits (for over €7). Reception staff were very helpful and although it was easy enough to walk down to Funchal it was quite mountainous coming back. There are no bars, cafes or shops near the hotel and no real beaches on the island (that we found). There was no TV in the room and no kettle although the staff immediately brought in an extra bed as we expected a twin room and were given a room with a small double bed. There are both positives and negatives with regard to this hotel but for the price we paid it was more than adequate.

Lovely hotel in a spot with wonderful views
This hotel is about 30 minutes walk away from the centre of Funchal, but isn't for those who don't like climbing steep hills. Fortunately for me, who lives in Wales, this wasn't a problem. This hotel is lovely in that it isn't in the bustle of the centre of beautiful Funchal, but in the hills around it. This area affords the opportunity to see real life in Funchal as opposed to the tourist view. On a positive note, the hotel is very traditional and is in a lovely spot, especially if you want to view the New Year's fireworks without being in town - the view is spectacular. However, I would recommend a few changes I the small rooms to update them. It doesn't bother me if I don't have a sea view - though this is something I would request next time - but the room I stayed in had only one fault and that was the way the furniture was arranged. The hotel staff are wonderful, friendly and will do their best to help whether it's a problem with the room or it's tourist info tips you want. I will definitely be going back, not this year but maybe next, thanks to the the hotel and the atmosphere.

Quiet area
Limited choice on the menu. Many items not available when requested. Waiter was always paid in cash but when checking out we were presented with a bill for food that had been paid for. Hotel said money "cannot be accounted for'. After some discussion they agreed it was a mistake. Seems the waiter had kept the cash & then put an unsigned bill into reception for me to pay again. Quality of food is average & expensive. Waiter service was appaling.Shame this aspect spoiled an otherwise ok stay. Reception staff were excellent. Sadly we cannot recommend this hotel & out next trip to Madeira in April will be to another hotel.

Lovely hotel,lovely views, lovely staff.
We are a couple in our fifties, and our stay was for one week. The hotel was, as we had read in previous reviews at the top of a long, steep incline, and although we are used to walking up hills, it was quite a challenge in the heat! The bus was an option though, so don't let this put you off. We chose to walk as that is what we do! The hotel itself was a delight! Every single member of staff were professional but extremely friendly, polite and helpful. We loved our room. We opted for a room with a balcony and a sea view, which I would highly recommend. One of the highlights of our stay was opening the shutters each morning to the glorious view!! The hotel was spotlessly clean and we had fresh towels every day, and a change of bed linen once. The hotel restaurant seemed popular, and we had breakfast included, which was fantastic, A choice of cooked breakfasts plus a buffet to choose from including fruit, juices, lovely fresh bread rolls and conserves, and CAKE! Plus unlimited fresh coffee. We chose to eat out for our other meals as the menu was no to our taste, but there were always plenty of people at the restaurant in the evenings. There was a really small pool which was great for a cooling dip at the end of the day, but not for serious swimming! There were safes if you required at reception. On the day of departure, the lady at reception kindly extended the time for us to vacate our room to 14:00 as our flight was late afternoon. We would definitely stay here again.

Absolutely recommended
Everything was good, my wife and me were very pleased with staff, room, cleanliness and location, specially for this lower prices. We also had a beautiful balcony with ocean view, but we were not spending that much time in the room.

Good value hotel with excellent staff
This hotel is very good value for money if you don't mind being a good 40 minute walk from the centre of Funchal. Buses do run close to the hotel but if, like us, you prefer to walk, it's a slog uphill. However, we preferred the quiet residential location to the "tourist" area with its huge hotels and international restaurants nearer the seafront. The Flame Tree had a lovely ambience and staff who were very willing to help in any way.

Friendly hotel
We enjoyed our stay here, small hotel, lovely atmosphere. Staff were really helpful. Fantastic views, steep hills to walk up and down to get to the city centre.( about 20 mins) if you go to funchal take the yellow bus tours, great way to see the area, and it passes nearby the hotel.

Small friendly hotel for active people off the mai
We really enjoyed our stay. The hotel is small and friendly - less than 40 rooms. Good location: close to bus 45 (to centre of the town) and 48 (to Monte) and also Yellow Bus (for sightseeing). Steep walk downhill to the sea and very close to one levada walk (look down from the main road). Friendly and helpful staff (e.g. enquiries or planning walking routes), for girls - bidet in the bathroom!, rooms were cleaned every day and towels changed daily, too. A breakfast served from 7.30 (good for walkers) to 10.00 (for longer lay-in). Basic facilities (no TV, fridge in the room but who cares, you should be outside most of the day) but with wifi connection. A small pool outside but cannot comment as did not use. V. tastfull burger sandwich with egg (served during bar opening hours) and also try egg benedict for breakfast. Multinational turists in the breakfast area - lovely!

Lovely friendly hotel
We were booked in else where but had been closed 3 weeks so we found out after we landed in funchal We got on to expedia and decided on this place seemed miles out of town. It wasn't. Could walk it about 20 min or brill bus service people so friendly and helpful. Reception man booked us in with out confirmation from Expedia but I kept phoning and all was sorted from 5-10 o clock evening had a meal at 10 at flame tree all home cooked food breakfast lovely very good egg benadict Loved every moment. Our room very clean. Tiny shower but we was booked in with only choice of 2 rooms. It was clean and once shutters open it was lighter and could see a bit of funchal the decking where we had breakfast had nice sea view and garden. The roof top view is good. Little pool. Staff helped to make it as all chatty. Only found out victors name he was lovely but so was couple other chaps in bar and at breakfast all good didn't want to leave for next hotel. Thank you flame tree for taking us in great weeks holiday would love to come back

Good value small hotel
Nice, small hotel. Rather a hilly, half hour walk to the centre of Funchal. A very good breakfast provided with a good range of food available. We opted to buy evening meals for the week. Again lovely, freshly cooked food but rather repetitive over the week. We should also have had a coffee or drink offered to us with our meal but this didn't happen. Only one person working in the dining room which made the service very slow.

We were moved on !
Having booked for three nights in the Flame Tree my husband and I arrived at reception to be greeted by a girl who simply said that there was a problem with three rooms. Because of this she said that we would be put up in their partner hotel in Central Funchal. As my husband was feeling unwell that day we did not question her although I did ask if there was a swimming pool and she said yes. A taxi was called and we were whisked off to a pension in Funchal with no swimming pool! This was no way to be treated with no explanation and also a totally inaccurate description of where we were being sent. Ratings are inappropriate as we were not past reception.
