As a platinum vip with Expedia and a gold member with Marriott Bonvoy, this property exceeded my expectations. Our suite was medium in comparison to other suites but had a huge terrace that we could watch sunset from. Only valet parking which is typical for the area however it was 70 a night whereas other properties average 40-50 but no waiting and easy call ahead pick up. Bell service was on point and immediate as we entered our room When I booked room, vip gave free champagne but when we got there it wasn’t in the room and notified guest services - they brought a red wine which I rejected and asked for champagne - they obliged without hesitation (even though I checked my reservation and the actual booking stated “wine or champagne if available) … the bottle given was a veuve mid range about $110-$130 ish so not a bad deal at all. Place is clean and new Location is perfect - easy access to restaurant row / nightlife / beach and pier Room service is great and quick however expensive which I rarely say- 2 cokes and 2 breakfast burritos is $109 not including tip Overall a great hotel and would definitely stay again. Note: bonvoy was slightly cheaper by $10 but didn’t give the champagne so that’s why I booked Expedia. If I wasn’t vip, bonvoy would of been about 300 less, just an fyi

Always a solid choice to stay
Always love my stay at the Santa Monica Proper Hotel. The only downside is the proximity of the hotel to the ocean, at best you will have ocean views.

Nice stay in Santa Monica
Nice stay, but in the winter the whole hotel is freezing because the hallways are outdoors. The cleaning team is also overly aggressive, banging down your door early in the morning to come in the rooms and they come back frequently. Very nice gym and rooftop bar and pool though.

Good choice for Santa Monica
The Proper is a newer nice clean place to stay in Santa Monica given how expensive all the hotels are in that area (it is expensive as well, given the room size). The rooms are small but nice. It can be quite loud on the Landmark side that is off Wilshire. Multiple sirens throughout the day can be heard as well as regular traffic. We had to wear earplugs at times. Our in-room Nespresso supplies were not replenished regularly. Be careful of in-room snacks-they are stupendously expensive (22.00 for M&M’s!!) The bath products are very nice there. Pretty rooftop bar and restaurant where you can watch the sunset. It is a popular spot and need to book reservations early. I’d probably stay there again while in Santa Monica, but stay in the Contemporary building (which can also be loud from the rooftop bar). Need to choose your room wisely. All the staff were friendly and helpful.

Location is not 5 stars
The location has suffered post covid, Wilshire around the hotel has a lot of shuttered locations and it's a 1/2 mile / 10+ minute walk to the bluff, which in the morning or evening when few people are around, you'll want to stay aware. Sketchy 7/11 across the street. Room was a "balcony," which it had, but it faced a wall. Why do this? The decor already feels circa 2020, so I'm not sure how eco-friendly it is when they swap out all those bubble chairs and headboards in a few years. Staff is really friendly/helpful.
