Its a great place and some staff are wonderful but for the second time I was accused wrongly of owing them money on departure (it was paid in advance) by a very agressive and extremely rude and uncooperative mature woman, causing offence and embarrassment in front of other guests.

Great location and pleasant
The Glenburn has seen better days. The decor is a bit tired and in need of refurb as as the bathrooms. But. it's clean, tidy, food was good, staff were terrific. So as budget stays go, it's hard to beat. The building itself looks like a 5 star hotel in images but that's not the case internally anymore. Wouldn't take much to transform the place, but i guess the investment vs return just isn't there anymore - which is a shame.
Nostalgic Trip to the Isle of Bute - November 2024
My sister and I had a really lovely stay at the Glenburn Hotel over the weekend and it was fabulous to see it open again after the new owners re-opened it earlier this year.
A truly iconic hotel with lots of character, stunning views over the harbour, lots of history, and much to offer.
We will be returning to the hotel again in 2025 when further refurbishment works during Dec to February 2025 are finished.
All the hotel staff were welcoming and friendly. Special thanks to Michael, Niall and Debbie in the main reception and also to Thomas who looked after us during our stay which was acknowledged and appreciated.
Good luck with ongoing renovations which will be appreciated by a future guests staying at the hotel.
I was looking forward to my stay here, after looking for Wheelchair Accessible hotels within budget. Online the Glenburn Hotel is listed as being wheelchair accessible - I had a phone call after sending an email and a message on Expedia about being a wheelchair user. I was told that there was a ramp however the gradient was no longer safe and there was around 8 steps. And they would make sure i was given a room with a walk in shower - which also did not happen and i couldnt even get my small 14inch wide wheelchair into the bathroom in our room. I am an above knee amputee who can use crutches to hop and navigate stairs and the toilet but it is highly exhausting.
I appreciated this phone call as a heads-up however, the number of stairs was downplayed, there were roughly ten stairs to get up to the outside of the hotel, another two steps to get in the front door of the hotel, and we were also told that I had another 3/4 stairs to navigate as there were only twin rooms without steps and I had booked a double room.
In future it would be helpful to be fully transparent about the amount of stairs at the property as I had planned my day and trip with the information in mind that i had to tackle 8 steps and had to end up doing double that.
i was not told at this point that their double rooms were only accessed by stairs. While the ramp is unsafe due to gradient i think it should be made clear that your hotel is not wheelchair accessible at the moment.
We had a lovely room with a great view. The large Victorian spaces of this hotel were kept very warm and comfortable. Fantastic views over tge bay, we watched the dolphin or porpoise play one morning.
Lovely period building. I had a room at the front of the hotel which had a lovely view across to the msinland.

Great stay only issue were the flood lights that are used at night are directly facing bedroom windows and even with curtains fully closed still lights up the room, it also prevents enjoying the view in the evening as you can’t see anything as the lights are so powerful.
At one time this property would have been grand but unfortunately it needs a lot of work done to improve it. The main floor was the only area that was kind of clean. The staff could use training as they seem to be unorganized and often idle. The outside table's never got cleaned over the several days we had been there. The room we had smelled of mold and there was signs of water leaks. There was a newer acrylic tub that had been installed in the bathroom that when you stepped in it, it felt like you would break through the bottom of it. It felt very sketchy and unsafe. The only positive is the beautiful view and the gardens going down the hill are lovely.
I will start with the positives. The staff were very friendly, the bedroom & bathroom were a good size. The shower was really powerful. The bed & pillow were very comfortable. The gardens were very nice & there was a great view from the terrace.
However, the hotel in general was very tired. What appeared to be the original entrance for reception was taped off with red & white plastic tape preventing access from the car park. There was a gap under the bedroom door into the corridor. The bedroom floor was a bit wonky & creaked loudly. The bathroom door didn’t shut properly & the hot tap in the sink didn’t turn off fully. The view from our window was of the roof tops in an internal courtyard. There appeared to be some kind of extractor fan running in the courtyard, which whilst not loud, was continuous.
This was obviously a very grand hotel in its day, but shows it’s age.
Requires updating. Shower Matt had mould, the shower tray had mould, the was a leak in the bathroom window and the sill was rotting. One bedroom window had a crack in it. In the stairwell you could see damage in the walls and ceiling from rain. Couldn’t use the front entrance due to damage.
Breakfast was good but expensive. Room was cold even with heating on. Towel rail in bathroom didn’t work. Bedding was clean but carpet had stains on.
Spacious room, comfortable bed and good breakfast.

Although I enjoyed my stay at the Glenburn and would return again the approach to the building with the main entrance taped off is a bit of an eyesore. Hopefully the repair to the structure of the building commences soon.
