The hotel itself was excellent. Staff was friendly. The bar had good food but exceptionally slow service. Also this is on the edge of the Tenderloin district so lots of drugs, crime and homeless in the area.

Misrepresentation of the room and hotel. Checked in, attendant was not particularly pleasant. When we got to the room, it was very small with stains on the sofa. Did not feel safe there and immediately went down to the front desk to request assistance or a room change. The attendant was someone else, not the person who checked us in 5 minutes earlier. The front desk attendant just said “give me the keys and you can leave”. So I did. I went across the street and stayed at the Hilton, which was fantastic. However when I contacted The Spero to speak with the manager, he was incredibly rude and refused to even give me a partial refund for my reservation. He said to call Expedia, which I did. Expedia said they tried and tried but the manager at The Spero refused to budge. In order to spare the horrible experience at The Spero, I ended up having to pay for 2 hotels. I would advise anyone and everyone NOT to stay at The Spero at Union Square in San Francisco. It is dirty, dingy, feels unsafe and the staff was incredibly rude. Pay more to stay elsewhere if you must!

Hotel was actually pretty nice and staff was friendly. Call outs - no parking at the hotel or affiliated lot. There is a lot right next door for $50/night. There is a cheaper lot a block down and over but was advised it’s a sketchy walk at night. Walking north seemed to be pretty safe but a couple streets down… hundreds of unsheltered lining the streets. Not sure what keeps them south but was absolutely amazed to be honest. Probably would stay again as long as the price stays competitive.

The hotel was very pretty and cozy and spacious in our suite. The area is close to many places so it was very convenient. There was no hotel parking but a public parking right next door.

Great, pleasant staff. Beautiful historic architecture. Great food nearby, particularly The Pinecrest Diner. Displaced human presence is evident everywhere around the city. The Tenderloin is no exception.

We stayed here 2 nights. The staff accommodated us by changing up our room. The room was clean, bed very comfortable and was really close to parking next door for a better rate than most. Liked the coffee in the lobby in the morning and great location if your wanting to use cable cars. Felt safe here too.

They will not release your deposit
My recent hotel stay at this establishment was a pleasant experience overall, with clean and updated rooms providing a comfortable stay. Despite the less-than-ideal location of the hotel, I felt very safe inside. However, I would advise potential guests to be aware that booking through a third party may result in additional charges, including deposit fees and other hidden fees. It has been 6 days since my stay and I have still not received my deposit refund, which is concerning. Due to these issues, I will not be returning for future visits or inconvenience.
