Good hotel.
Nice room. Clean. Friendly staff. Breakfast was minimal, especially if you are more used to Western food. Would come back.

Wonderful refurbished mansion
One of my best hotel experiences ever. So nice to be out of the normal business hotel and into a piece of history with true comfort and class. The hotel staff were the best part of the experience.

History and mediocrity
Loved the historical aspect of the hotel but conditions were average...with carpets needing a good cleaning. I stay in Shanghai about 10 nights per year and would not put this in my top ten hotels, even at the price point

Reality and virtual don't match!
Looks great in the pictures and description, that's why I booked. However, finding it was difficult for the taxi driver due to the one way streets. There is a long driveway and stairs which you may be negotiating by yourself with luggage, as no one came to help. During check in, a man came to stand by my bags, so I assumed he was the porter, nope, he walked away and I had to carry by bags to my room as well. The advertisement says city or garden view, unless you happen to get the room with no window. Yes, it looks like a window, but it's mirrored and locked shut so I couldn't even tell if it was day or night. I pointed this out to the staff and was informed that they were booked and I should ask for a room transfer the following day. I transferred to another hotel.

Wonderful charm and character
What a great find, right in the Puxi business district. It is a mansion converted to a hotel and is very nicely done in period furnishings, Chinese pre-war style. The room is a bit small, but there is a bowl of fruit and the bathroom is luxurious with a bathtub for two and shower for two, and toilet wash seat, and WiFi works in the room. Unfortunately the handheld shower was not operable, and the room safe's battery was low (my only reason for not giving a hiring rating). The staff were friendly and helpful. I have stayed at the Portman-Ritz Carlton and the Shanghai JC Mandarin (both very nearby) but I would prefer to be back in this boutique hotel for the charm and character. I did not get a chance to try the restaurant.

Charming place but a bit of a squeeze for couples
I usually stay in Shanghai in the typical business-class hotels but decided to give something different a try as this was recommended by a Chinese colleague. The Hotel is a former private family house which belonged to a notable architect, dates from 1934. The lobby area is furnished with elegant pieces and furnishings and the main spiral Dragon Staircase is impressive. The rooms are compact but beautifully furnished with velvets and trimmings and there are nice touches with desk furniture and occasional chairs, but little storage space so it would be a squeeze for a couple. The bathroom was spacious with a lovely deep whirlpool bath and a high-tech toilet which had some interesting functions. Breakfast is served in the room and the western selection was a rubbery omelette and stale waffle and pancake, again this would be an issue if it was a couple sharing the room due to lack of space. The WiFi is free and fast which makes a nice change. Staff are very attentive, cheerful and speak good English. Don't expect a gym or a business centre, it's a large house which has been tastefully conveted into a charming hotel. There are plenty of restaurants in the neighbourhood which are cheap and interesting, avoid the nearby Sports Bar or expect to be hassled by the short-skirted staff whilst enjoying your pint and grub whilst watching a game on the screens.

Hidden Gem
Designed for the family of the famous architect I.M. Pei ( who is the architecht designed Louvre Pyramid, Paris and bank of China, Hong Kong), the hotel gives you a taste of the glamour in old shanghai in 30's yet with the best mordern technology. I stayed there everytime, it has character and the staff is really nice and friendly. Makes me feel like living in an old beautiful house with your own butler. I almost don't want to say too many nice thing to it such that it will not become too popular and end up becoming too expensive....

Not up to a 5-star hotel standard
This is labeled as a 5-star hotel. However, the service is not even at a 2-star level. The room rate I paid included breakfast. I had a Chinese breakfast on my first morning. The buns were cold! The porridge was also cold. It seems that someone had cooked it at 5am and served at 8am without any heating.

Great Value
Even for the least expensive rooms this place is a wonderful value. The location of the hotel is a long walk from either of the two closest subway stations especially if one is puling luggage. Take a taxi.

Hotel with character but....
The location was great; we were near shopping malls and at the same time could get a local flavour by going down side streets. We were disappointed as we were expecting a 5 star hotel, it is probably more a 4 star one. When we arrived at the hotel and got out of the taxi there was staff there but no one helped with our luggage or to direct us. They then lined up at the entrance like an honour guard while we walked in carrying our own luggage! Prior to booking, I had read the service was quite good so I was expecting more.

The Pei Mansion
If you have had enough of typical boiler plate five star hotels and want something more interesting or representative of the city you are in, then this is an excellent boutique hotel in 1930s Shanghai style. A very modern bathroom compliments the rooms. Only issue being very thin walls (at least in the room I was in) and a very ordinary breakfast. I'd stay there again and would recommend it to friends

Elegant and historical hotel
This is a wonderful, historical old home which has recently been renovated into a boutique hotel with a luxurious and elegant feel to it. It is a combination of Colonial, with its lovely design and architecture and ancient Chinese with its traditional style Chinese furniture. The foyer is grand and stylish with deep pile carpet, lounges, tall ceilings which opens to a large, walled front garden in traditional Chinese style. The room was big and had lush carpets, a big and reasonably comfortable bed, TV, a traditional writing desk, good air conditioning, a safe and cupboard space. The furniture is period, dark wood, Chinese style with light fittings, bedroom and bathroom doors to match the style. There was tea/coffee making facilities and complementary chocolates – a nice touch. Breakfast is served in the room and it was nice enough. The bathroom was magnificent with the biggest and deepest bathtub; so big it had a step to be able to get in and out. The tiles were marble inlay and the bathroom had gold trim on a clear and frosted glass divider and a mirror the length of the bathtub. Everything was clean and spotless. This room certainly made for a rich and lush feel to our stay. The location is reasonably good and close to the city centre. We only stayed for 2 nights and therefore didn’t really get a feel for the area. I would certainly recommend this hotel. It is beautiful, elegant and takes you a step back in time to the early 1930s of Shanghai.

Amazing find in quiet French Concession street
Amazing find, great location. Great room. Helpful staff. This is a high-end boutique hotel. I did not have a desk in my room, so it's not a great place for business people who need to spend time behind a desk.

best stay ever in China
If you come to China often you know one still needs to temper their expectations when it comes to hotels, even the one's with 4 and 5 stars. But I have to say I was extremely pleased and comfortable in this hotel; Outside of the obvious that it is a gorgeous mansion; -location is great in the heart of a very sheik neighborhood of restaurants, shopping, cafes and bars. -The staff was very kind and helpful. -The breakfast was pretty good, served to your room. -The room was royal; very nice furnishings, well appointed work area, incredible jetted tub and jetted shower, western standard king bed. And yes the internet works very well. There is not expanded menu of room service however there is may restaurants and cafes on the street as well around the corner at Shanghai Plaza in front of the Ritz there is Thai, Taiwanese, Italian, ... Starbucks.

Good location, beautiful Art Deco styling
On Nanyang Rd just off of Nanjing Rd West about 10 minutes walk from Jing'An Temple and near shopping malls and major hotels such as the Ritz-Carlton and J.W. Marriott, the central location is hard to beat. Nanyang Rd itself has a few noisy bars (some of dubious character), however once you step through the gate of the property itself, a whole different world. The Pei Mansion Hotel takes you straight back to 1930s Shanghai, and could be used as a movie set. The rooftop bar/restaurant was apparently under renovation, so I didn't get a chance to see it. The Duplex Suite I stayed in comprised two floors - a luxurious bathroom and work desk below, linked by stairs to the bedroom and additional powder room above. Neither upstairs nor the downstairs areas were large, but the setting was unique. Furnishings, lamps, etc. were period pieces. My schedule was such that I left the hotel late in the morning and didn't return until after midnight, so I didn't encounter many staff nor utilise any hotel services. Those staff that I did deal with were courteous and helpful. Overall, an enjoyable stay and would recommend and stay again.

Not really a Mansion
Interesting antique furnitures and tried to please but this hotel is for unique guest profile, just not me. No place to eat inside the hotel for breakfast or lunch. Ordered room service for breakfast and bell boy arrived shortly in jeans with just got up look, it was almost 8am. Food arrived on very dirty cafeteria tray; needlessly to say, I did not even touch the tray. I was so ready to depart the hotel that I got to airport 3 hours earlier to avoid this hotel. All future guests should know that this hotel is local Chinese-style standard of what we know as Mansion...

Hotel at its infant stage
This is an old building in Shanghai with history but at its infant stage as hotel. At least its hardware is not ready for a 5-star hotel. Room is small. Internet and TV connections are on and off constantly. It's better to wait at least 1 year before it's getting mature as a hotel.
