Christmas getaway for the fam. Two sisters, one driving from Albq., and elderly mother from Glenwood along with my kids and dogs. Planned and paid for in late October. Last min request to move ahead a day due to unexpected artic cold front was granted without hesitation and we were even allowed to stay through our original planned checkout day as a courtesy, one free day. I inquired about the frequency of power outages because there is no fireplace, we were concerned about not having heat. I was told power didn't go out often and there is central heat available and cancelation was understood if we decided to call it off (at that point we were not eligible for a full refund though) When I arrived we were almost completely out of water, the pipes had frozen quickly in the master side of the home and most of the remainder. I called immediately to see if there were heaters to put under home (no underpinning and little to no insulation) in attempt to thaw, the owner wasn't very friendly or compassionate and kept saying "I don't know what to tell you". Her husband drove up earlier to turn on the heat and let the water run but by the time I'd arrived that night, most everything was frozen solid. No hot water, only ice cold, and flushing with buckets for 3 days had us feeling rough. We really had to put in some work to be comfortable. On the third day the sun came out, the hot water had finally come on, and we could shower and clean up. The well water is strong of sulfur and did make me somewhat sick to my stomach after showering for some reason but it didn't bother anyone else, we were all still happy to just have a shower! It was about that time when all started to really enjoy ourselves. The rest of our stay was great and we all had so much fun. We were able to spend good time together and with mom, away from the world. No cell/internet is exactly what we all needed! The home was well stocked with all sorts of things and we didn't find ourselves without supplies. The owner was great (until there was any mention of troubles or problems we'd had), even made us lemon bread! I guess she thought I was trying to request a partial refund but I needed compassion and helpful info, is all. All-in-all, our vaca was great & quite the experience. We'd go back, just not in the middle of winter/summer. Improvements are needed for comfort in extreme temperatures.
