Our recent stay at the Besos de Sal boutique hotel in Colan was a disappointing experience that left a very bad taste and ruined our vacation.
The staff member who checked us in offered us services to get drinks and other necessities from the shops as they weren't located close by. We requested a large bottle of water, a bag of plantain chips and a bottle of wine to be delivered prior to sunset that evening. Even after 4+ hours and past sunset we had not received our order despite multiple reminders. Later that night after dinner when we enquired again, we were given a large bag of chips and small water bottles. Which was not what we asked for. Upon highlighting this, he then got us the large bottle of water. The staff member requested payment for the water and chips of 12.50 soles which we paid him that night. He had got the bottle of wine but it was too late to enjoy at sunset to celebrate my friend's birthday. We chose to have it on the last day of our stay instead.
At check-out we were presented with an extremely overpriced bill for the water, chips and wine. The wine retails at S.30 but the hotel charged us S.90 plus S.25 for the chips. This meant the 3-litre bottle of water was S.12.50 when it retails for S.3 - 4. It is expected the hotel would charge a reasonable markup but to charge a ridiculous amount as they have is totally unacceptable. We were forced to pay the inflated prices at checkout. It was extremely unfair and unreasonable to take advantage of guests.
