Warning to VRBO Users: Beware of Fraudulent Practices by Partner Companies
I booked a property on VRBO based on positive reviews, the advertised amenities, and the available space. Everything seemed perfect until, suspiciously and conveniently, after the refund window closed, the property owner informed me that the property was suddenly “unavailable.” The owner offered two alternative properties, also listed on VRBO. He offered them for the same price which momentarily eased my suspicions. Trusting the reviews, I selected one of the options.
The Bait and Switch
Upon arrival, it became evident that the substituted property fell significantly short of expectations. The master toilet constantly ran and frequently clogged, and the stove malfunctioned after the first day, leaving us without a working stove for 95% of our stay. These issues were frustrating and significantly impacted our experience.
Coercion to Suppress Negative Reviews
During our stay, I communicated these issues to the owner, expressing my dissatisfaction. After returning home and waiting a few days without any follow-up, I contacted the owner regarding the return of my deposit. I was given a vague response: “We’ll speak to the manager and get back to you.” A week after checkout, I followed up again and was informed that 50% of my deposit would be withheld for “cleaning,” despite the carpet being in a worn and stained condition upon our arrival.
I was then asked to agree to an NDA and offered “compensation” for not leaving a bad review. I declined. No deposit refunded to date.
