The Royal Oak Hotel is a mixed bag. It’s got generous-sized rooms, but the place feels a bit tired and worn out — a bit tatty, and in need of some refurbishment. There was some noise from the surrounding area in the evening, which might be an issue if you’re a light sleeper.
One real gem nearby is Penelope, a lovely little wine bar just around the corner. It has a laid-back, effortlessly stylish vibe and wouldn’t be out of place in Whitstable — think natural wines, simple small plates, and thoughtful decor. A perfect spot to unwind after a walk along the seafront.
Also worth mentioning is The Brasserie on the Dock — an old-school, family-run restaurant with friendly service and solid value. The food isn’t fancy, but it’s comforting and done well, and the warm welcome makes a real difference.
