I think a lot of people will be turned off by the businesses that directly surround this hotel, specifically the "red numbers." However, I found the area to be very pleasant once I got passed that. The food in the area is about 1/10th of the price of restaurants downtown and the quality is fantastic. The people are extremely friendly and courteous. As a white American I stood out like a sore thumb and felt very safe and welcomed. The train to get downtown is still a short walk away and very easy to access and not difficult to understand if you put in the slightest effort. I personally preferred my experience in the geylang and kallang neighborhoods over the tourist areas. This is true Singapore without the corporate money-leeching that the tourist traps downtown offer. Make of it what you will. If I were to return to Singapore I'd look in this area again

A mixed bag

I appreciated staff member Jay's service, the filtered drinking water, strong water pressure, hard yet comfy bed, safe, and waterkettle, and convenient location near MRT. However, I was less pleased with Internet not working anymore three (!!) times, after which I gave up; only 6 tv channels most of which were local and/or not in English, the ultra thin walls, so that noisy neighbours kept me from sleeping, so I had to urge them to "please be quiet", the small sized room, and the shower causing the whole bathroom floor to get wet after use

It’s in a red light district area. But It’s safe to walk along the street. Unlike some sketchy places in united states. Our room is clean. The reception officers are super helpful and kind with taxi reservations and other inquiries about the whereabouts. It’s convenient to take buses if u are not in a rush. Plenty of local food options.

Efficient staff and reasonably close to the airport. Nice cheap food close by. Rooms were basic but clean. Bathroom was a small and the shower wets the entire floor. Bit of a slip risk for elderly. Room slippers would have been good to have. Ok for an overnight stay.

Overnight Stay in Singapore

The rooms have been refurbished recently. Clean and comfordable. Plenty of eating options nearby. Many open 24 hours. Handy for trains and buses.

Clean but very basic hotel. Perfect for short stays in a clean and simple room. Aircon was very effective. But is likely to not feel welcoming enough for an extended stay.

The stay at the Hotel 81 Palace was very nice, it was definitely recently renovated and I enjoyed the evenings in a comfortable, decently sized room. I would say that the area around the hotel was... not what you'd think of when you think Singapore. But it's also a lot cheaper, and food/transportation options were more than good enough. I would say definitely take a cab to/from the hotel on arrival/departure because it's not super easy to get you and your luggage to the airport.
