My youngest son was about to head off for school and wanted to do something special with friends and family. He wanted to go camping in the coast so I did what any parent would do: I surprised him and his friends with this wonderful cabin in Black Butte Ranch! As we headed east, I had to field a lot of questions during the four hour drive. I held my tongue until we got to the entrance of the ranch. “Surprise!”
No one said a word. Uh oh. Turns out the silence was from shock. Two friends thought Black Butte Ranch was a myth; legendary if you will.
I followed the instructions given to me by the host. It sounded complex but in actuality, it was super simple and smooth. We go through the gate and make the 5m drive to the home. As we got closer, the car filled with the familiar scent of warm pine needles baking in the sun. As we turned off the street and onto the paved driveway, I’m pretty sure all four of us in the car said “Nooo waayyy!” I have never seen so many doors fly open as the group swarmed the house, pointing to the features and soaking up seats on the front porch.
As I opened the door, three eager young-adults nearly trampled me as they made their way inside. The moment I saw the inside, I shouted “shoes off!” It may not be the house policy but it’s mine. It’s that kind of place. As I entered, I nearly passed the amazing greeting left by the hosts. Immediately, my first impression was stamped: The home and the hosts are top notch.
